Francis C. Smith Photographs, Mrs., 1948-1955.

This collection contains photographs of courthouses, churches, post offices, rivers, lakes, schools, industrial areas, farms, and private residences in cities and towns across North Georgia and the Atlanta area. Included are images taken in Alpharetta, Atlanta, Ben Hill, Bolton, Crabapple, Fairburn, Morgan Falls, Newton, Roswell and Warsaw, Georgia. Among the photographs are images of the old Milton County Courthouse of Alpharetta, the Chattahoochee Industrial Park in Atlanta, Mt. Gilead Campground in Ben Hill, Owl Rock Methodist Church in Ben Hill, the Bolton Post Office, Campbellton Methodist Church, Morgan Falls Power Plant, Lebanon Baptist Church in Roswell, Mimosa Hall in Roswell, Roswell Presbyterian Church, and Judge Clark Howell's residence in Warsaw. The photographer entered these images in a photo contest sponsored by the Atlanta Historical Society in the 1950s. The reverse side of the images includes information about the type of camera and film used, and additional historical information about the subjects.

Clark Howell, editor, legislator, and politician, was born September 21,1863, in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and died November 14, 1936 in Atlanta, Georgia. After his father (Evan Park Howell) retired as publisher of the Atlanta Constitution, he replaced him and bought control of the newspaper in 1901, becoming editor-in-chief for 35 years.
